Queensland PCYC Benefits from Multiple Branch Microsoft Donation
With 45 branches throughout Queensland, Australia, PCYC have more than 100 different activities for young people to enjoy, with activities varying from branch to branch.

The Youth Clubs facilitate and encourage participation in sporting, recreation, cultural and welfare programs with the aim of improving the lives of individual members, and also developing local communities throughout the state.

Mark Walker, PCYC Corporate Services Manager said that as a non-government, not-for-profit organisation, PCYC was very careful with its expenditure. In August 2008, through the DonorTec program, the organisation received over $15,000 worth of Microsoft® equipment, including software and licensing, at a fraction of the cost. “We have just received an organisation-wide donation,” explained Mark.  “We have previously only accessed small items in the past at a few locations.”

Mark said the donated goods had enabled PCYC to roll out a state-wide IT platform where all PC’s will have standard systems and a standard operating environment. “I would really recommend DonorTec to other not-for-profits because it’s a great program that is probably too good for people to believe.  We are very lucky that a large corporate such as Microsoft provides this support to organisations like ours”
Connecting Up 2009 - ‘The Online Future of Nonprofits Are we there yet?’ 11-12 May

Following the highly successful Connecting Up Conferences 2004-2008, Australia’s National Non-profit Technology Conference Connecting Up 2009 ‘The Online Future of Nonprofits Are we there yet?’ will be held on the 11th-12th May with workshops on the 13th May. The conference will be held in Sydney (New South Wales) this year at the Brighton Novotel.

It is already shaping up to be one of the best yet in the Connecting Up Series. Last year was a corker in Brisbane and this year in Sydney has already attracted an exciting crew with more to come:
  • We have the Managing Director of Microsoft Australia, Tracey Fellows, joining us as a speaker to talk about the amazing things Microsoft does in and for the community and some of their new directions.
  • We have Jay and Ryanne – the star Video Blog experts of the US presenting at the conference and also running a fantastic workshop on Wed  13th ( Book early for this one!) Check out their awesome site showing how it can be done - raise the profile of your community group! http://ryanishungry.com

Connecting Up 09 will aim to bring you more world class presenters and exciting case studies from people just like you from all around Australia, dig deeper into the issues of using the technology to build capacity and the management of all that “new information and communication media”. We will also build in some workshops to allow you to be “hands on” and “have a go” with some new technologies.

50 Ways Marketers Can use Social Media to Improve Their Marketing

Social media isn’t always the right tool for the job. Not every company needs a blog. YouTube worked for BlendTec, but it might not work for your company. And yet, there’s something to this. Over the last three days, I’ve spoken to four HUGE brands in America that are considering social media for one project or another, and there are many more out there working on how these tools might integrate into their business needs. Here’s a list of 50 ideas (in no particular order) to help move the conversation along. Note: I mix PR and Marketing. They should get back together again.

Making Links 08 – The Conference Where Technology and Social Action Converge 11-13 November

Beginning in 2004 Making Links has been a conference that seeks to engage interested people, organisations and groups working at the intersection of social action and IT - including community workers, educators, trainers, not-for-profit organisations, school teachers, environmental campaigners and activists. This year’s conference seeks to:

  • Bring the community sector together to access resources, training and services, and to share ideas, skills and creative applications of technology.
  • Explore the possibilities ICTs generate for communities whose voices have been marginalized and excluded from the mainstream.
Showcase innovative, grass roots ICT initiatives in community cultural development, outreach, and e-learning.
  • Build and develop networks amongst workers and activists interested in how ICT can be used to support social justice.

On top of an already exciting program Making Links is pleased to announce a Web Development satellite event from 10.00 to 5.00 on Friday November 14. Topics discussed will include:

  • Managing your community website
  • Working with developers
  • Choosing the right tools

Testimonial Competition - Thank Our Donor Partners by Lodging Your Testimonial

All of us here at DonorTec would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to enter our current Testimonial Competition. You have justified the time we invest into facilitating this program with some very rewarding stories of how software donations have helped to increase the speed and efficiency of day to day operations of your organisations. Just as importantly we are beginning to see just how great an impact the DonorTec Program has had on the human aspect of community based organisations.

We have discovered that previously untenable training services to children and seniors are now being offered. We have discovered that cost effective networking solutions provided via DonorTec have enabled the networking of computers which have in turn connected those isolated by their geographic location. We are finding those previously disadvantaged by their socio-economic background or lack of education and resources are now increasing their employability and self worth by completing computer courses run with donated software. These are only a few of the examples we have received thus far.

We cannot continue to run a donations program that helps the community in the unique way this it does without the support of our donors. Our donors would love to see you telling your story as to how your donated software has affected your organisation and touched those you serve. This is more than a testimonial competition, it is your chance to let our donor partners know that what they are doing is really helping. We urge those of you who have not yet entered this competition to do so now as the closing date for entries is October 31.
