Merry Christmas

The DonorTec team would like to take this opportunity to advise that customer support will not be available from 25 December 2008 and we will resume operations 5 January 2009. Please note that we will not be submitting orders to our corporate donors during this period so donation recipients should expect some delays. All other facets of the site will be operational during this time. We would also like to extend our gratitude to you, the supporters of the program, and wish you a safe and happy Christmas period.

Refer a Friend Competition
Has anyone ever seen the movie Pay it Forward? Essentially it is about a little boy who believes the world may become a better place if a good deed is not returned but forwarded to at least three more people. The viral effect of good deeds he creates not only changes his life for the better but is returned to his family and close friends.

DonorTec’s new competition works on the very same premise. We are asking your organisation that may have already benefitted from its membership with DonorTec to refer us to as many fellow not-for-profit organisations as possible. The winner of this competition will be the organisation that refers the most organisations to DonorTec from today 10 December 2008 until 28 February  2009.  The lives of the winners will be forever changed for the better as they will become the recipients of DonorTec’s most valuable prize ever given….

DonorTec Administration Fees
You may have noticed that some of our administration fees have increased recently. Like everyone else, the effects of the falling Australian dollar in comparison to the US means we have to make these adjustments from time to time. Please be assured that we are not increasing our base admin fees; we are simply reflecting a change to our costs in bringing you this valuable service.
Anti-Spam Solutions for Nonprofits

By: Chris Peters
December 2, 2008

If you’re not familiar with the term, spam messages are annoying, unsolicited email messages (usually advertisements for bogus products). Depending on who you listen to, spam constitutes between 50 and 90 percent of all email traffic. In addition to violating the law by sending you emails that you didn’t ask for, spammers often use their messages to perpetrate fraud on the people who respond. Unless you’ve been offline for the past 15 years, you know all this and you’d never reply to a spam email. Nonetheless, this deluge of unwanted emails can overwhelm you, fill your inbox and drown out legitimate messages. Furthermore, spam messages often contain spyware, viruses and other forms of malware.

As an IT manager or accidental techie, you have two main strategies for fighting spam. First, educate yourself and your colleagues about how spam works. The message here boils down to: Be careful about when and where you divulge your email address. See Things You Can Do to Prevent Spam for more information on the education and training approach. Second, you can use technology to battle spam. The rest of this article will focus on anti-spam technologies, also known as spam filters.

Microsoft Launches New Online Resource for Nonprofit Groups

Would you like to have technology help your organisation achieve its goals but do not know where to start?

Microsoft have gone a long way to helping your non-profit organisation achieve this goal with the availability of NGO Connection, a new online resource for thousands of non-profit groups around the world. Driven by feedback from non-profit partners and years of experience working with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), the online resource is designed to assist NGOs to more efficiently use technology to achieve their goals as well as to encourage networking and coordination of NGO resources across the world.

The primary goal of the new online resource is to provide a convenient and easy one-stop shop for technology resources, knowledge sharing, community building and real-life examples for non-profit organizations. By using simple, nontechnical terminology, NGO Connection endeavours to make it easier for NGOs to access the complete range of Microsoft resources and offerings, and help them effectively use other online resources for non-profit groups.

Adelaide Thinkers in Residence - Genevieve Bell Sponsorship

Connecting Up Australia is a sponsor of the latest  residency in this unique SA program that has national implications,
Adelaide Thinkers in Residence. Originally from Sydney but currently the Director of User Experience in Intel Corporation’s Digital Home Group in the United States, Genevieve Bell travels extensively observing people in their homes to find out how they use, and what they want from, technology.

She considers how people live and what matters to them, she brings the human component into discussions about technology, and passes on that knowledge for the development of new technologies. Genevieve will spend significant time working with regional and remote communities, Aboriginal people and people of culturally diverse backgrounds.

As a result of this sponsorship, Genevieve will identify opportunities, spaces and barriers for further uptake of technologies for economic and social development, considering a cross-section of the population. Although the timing of her residency doesn’t allow her to speak at CU09, we’ll be organising a special event while she’s here so that you can be part of this exciting initiative.
