Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Standard Edition provides small organisations with many of the features used by large organisations - folder and printer sharing, an email server, tools to manage Internet access, internal websites (intranets), remote access, support for mobile devices, and backup/restore tools - in an integrated product that supports up to 75 users.

Organisations with 25 users or less should consider Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Essentials.

Remote Web Access gives any worker with a web browser secure access to email, internal websites, shared folders, organisation and administration links, and networked computers. Access can be restricted by assignment to groups or roles. Microsoft Windows Mobile-based devices can access e-mail, calendar, contacts, and tasks from the server.

The organisation is protected from unauthorised users and data loss with:

  • Built-in firewall protection
  • Automatic data backup and the ability to retrieve and restore previous versions

Automated patch and update management tools keep the server and networked computers up-to-date. Administrators can set the level of automatic approval and the times at which updates occur.

Microsoft Small Business Server 2011's management console provides administrators with a set of tabs and wizards that lets them perform all necessary tasks. The console's Home window shows at a glance by green check or warning icons whether security, updates, backups, and other functions are OK or need attention.
