Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 is an "all-in-one" server solution, bundling server operating systems with relevant applications and services. It provides organisations with application server technologies like folder and printer sharing, an email server, tools to manage Internet access, internal websites (intranets), remote access, support for mobile devices, and backup/restore tools.

As its name suggests, Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 is designed for small organisations. It supports a maximum of 75 users and would be appropriate for organisations that will not exceed this number of simultaneous user connections in the near future.

Note: Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Essentials supports a maximum of 25 users. It is designed for home offices and small organisations.

Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Essentials

Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Essentials provides home offices and small organisations with many of the features used by large organisations including network folder and printer sharing, remote access, support for mobile devices, and backup/restore tools in an integrated product that supports up to 25 users. 

 

Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Standard Edition

Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Standard Edition is designed and priced for small businesses with up to 75 users, Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Standard delivers enterprise-class server technology in an affordable, all-in-one solution.  Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Standard helps protect your business information from loss by performing automatic daily backups. Additionally, it allows users to be more productive with features such as e-mail, Internet connectivity, internal websites, remote access, and file and printer sharing.

 

Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Premium Edition

Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Premium Add-on provides organisations with a licence for Microsoft SQL Server and an additional copy of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 to host the installation of Microsoft SQL Server on an additional database server. Microsoft SQL Server allows businesses to use a centralised database for server-based applications such as accounting, business planning and contact management, allowing all employees to work from the same information.

 

Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Standard Edition and Premium Add-on Bundle

Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Standard Edition and Premium Add-on Bundle is suited to organisations that require the premium features of Microsoft Small Business Server 2011, as it only counts as one title under Microsoft's donation program title restrictions. It is the equivalent of an upgraded version of Microsoft Small Business Server 2008 Premium, which has now been discontinued under the donation program.

 

Client Access Licences

A Microsoft Small Business Server device or user CAL is required for each user or device accessing or using Microsoft Small Business Server.

Each version of Microsoft Small Business Server comes with five CALs that can be used for either users or devices. Microsoft Small Business Server 2008 Premium Edition and Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Premium Add-on both include five Premium Add-on CALs.

Microsoft offers both standard and premium user and device CALs for Microsoft Small Business Server through DonorTec.

Microsoft Small Business Server Standard Device CALs and Microsoft Small Business Server Standard User CALs are considered as one title under Microsoft's donation program title restrictions. Similarly, Microsoft Small Business Server Premium Device CALs and Microsoft Small Business Server Premium User CALs are considered one title.

 

Device Client Access Licences (CALs)

Microsoft Small Business Server Device CALs allow one computer to access the capabilities of Microsoft Small Business Server 2011, regardless of the number of users. This is particularly useful on a shared computer.

Microsoft Small Business Server Single Standard Device CAL

Microsoft Small Business Server Single Standard Device CAL provides access to the standard features of Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Standard Edition or Microsoft Small Business Server 2008 Standard Edition for one device, regardless of the number of users.

Microsoft Small Business Server Single Premium Add-on Device CAL

Microsoft Small Business Server Single Premium Add-on Device CAL provides access to the premium features of Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Premium Add-on, or Microsoft Small Business Server 2008 Premium Edition allowing licenced devices to access the additional server running line-of-business applications, Microsoft SQL Server, and optionally Terminal Services, regardless of the number of users.

Microsoft Small Business Server Device CAL Suite

Microsoft Windows Small Business Server Device CAL Suite is a set of Microsoft Windows Small Business Server Device CALs for Microsoft Windows Small Business Server. It includes a Microsoft Small Business Server Single Standard Device CAL and a Microsoft Small Business Server Single Premium Add-on Device CAL.

 

User Client Access Licences (CALs)

Microsoft Small Business Server User CALs allow one user to access the capabilities of Microsoft Small Business Server on any number of computers or other devices. This is particularly useful when an employee accesses the server from a computer at work and another at home. 

Microsoft Small Business Server Single Standard User CAL

Microsoft Small Business Server Single Standard User CAL provides access to the standard features of Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Standard Edition or Microsoft Small Business Server 2008 Standard Edition for one user, regardless of how many devices they access the server from.

Microsoft Small Business Server Single Premium Add-on User CAL

Microsoft Small Business Server Single Premium Add-on User CAL provides access to the premium features of Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Premium Add-on, or Microsoft Small Business Server 2008 Premium Edition allowing licenced users to access the additional server running line-of-business applications, Microsoft SQL Server, and optionally Terminal Services, regardless of how many devices they access the server from.
