Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Essentials provides home offices and small organisations with many of the features used by large organisations including network folder and printer sharing, remote access, support for mobile devices, and backup/restore tools in an integrated product that supports up to 25 users.
Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Essentials provides the core Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard technologies, but not those appropriate only to medium-to-large enterprises. Organisations requiring server access for more than 25 users should consider Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Standard or Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Premium Add-on.
Microsoft Small Business Server Essential's simplified management console allows administrators to organise and maintain an organisation's file structure and displays a comprehensive view of the health and security of client computers and servers in the network to manage common IT tasks and address technology issues. The console's Home window shows whether security, updates, backups, and other functions are functioning properly or need attention at a glance by green checks or warning icons.
Remote Web Access gives any user with a web browser secure access to email, internal websites, shared folders, organisation and administration links, and networked computers. Microsoft Windows Mobile-based devices can also access e-mail, calendar, contacts, and tasks. Access can be restricted by assignment to groups or roles.
A centralised data repository provides access to documents and allows control over how information is shared by users on the network. Data management and analysis tools make it possible to use server-based business applications or run multiple business applications suites on an additional server.
Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 is available only as a 64-bit operating system and can be installed only on a server with a 64-bit processor.
