DonorTec Impact | Kurbingui Youth Association

The following extracts have been taken from a letter we received from Sue Perel from Kurbingui Youth Development Association expressing her appreciation for the DonorTec program and the X-box which her organisation won in a previous DonorTec competition.

Kurbingui Youth Development Association provides support services to the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people in the northern suburbs of Brisbane.

Our young people in the Get Set For Work project and our Friday night activities have benefited through accessing the X Box and related resources. The Department of Transport has a learn to drive program to run on the X Box. That’s got to be a winner!

We provide access to on the job skills training in construction; administration and primary health care training and employment placement. We are consistently achieving a 70% placement rate. The Yeaca Dhargo (working altogether) family programs include family violence and drug & alcohol initiatives.

Clients are supported into specialist counselling in the main stream services. Our programs are culturally sensitive; clients prefer to discuss family and personal issues with other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people.

Our training area requires continual maintenance and updating which is very costly, so we are dependant on donations of used computers from Government departments. Our organisation grew out of ‘Kurbingui Boxing Club’ which identified the need for a more holistic support service for those young people who were participating in recreation activities.

Our first venture at purchasing online through DonorTec was a bit challenging at first but surprisingly we got the hang of it and won a prize for doing so. Wicked! When the software arrived it truly was like Christmas unwrapping all that stuff. We tried to think ahead to encompass our needs for the coming year at least, and the saving is immeasurable. This has meant that we can plan ahead for developing programs and know that we have the resources on hand instead of waiting for a funding opportunity.
